Gayton
Union Representative
My roots are from the old Union shipping port of
Coos Bay. My mother was a hard working single
mom of three. She was a union school
teacher and took every opportunity to teach me
what it meant to be union and to respect union
ideals. I learned the importance of; having a
union collective bargaining contract, binding
arbitration, and that the real meat and potatoes
was being able to speak to management with one
collective voice. I learned that; wages,
health and welfare, hours and overtime, sick
leave, and vacation days are all gravy.
I’ve been a chef and a landscaper. I
picked up most of my Spanish while plying those
trades and while volunteering with the Centro
por Refugiados de Centroamerica (a run through
the Episcopal church during the civil wars in El
Salvador and Nicaragua.) During that same time I
worked as an online advocate for Monterey Rape
Crisis, where I learned a lot about getting
people to resources, and helping them towards
empowerment.
I worked three years with SEIU Local# 49 as a
janitor for Best Building Maintenance an the
last twelve years I have spent working with
IATSE Local#28 as a union stagehand. I am
excited to be working for the members of
UFCW555.
