Union Representative
Lucy first
learned the importance of union
membership working for Safeway in
Southern California. The active union
membership taught her that standing
together is part of life for working
people. She worked there for six years,
then in 1993, moved to the Columbia
Gorge, where she continued her
employment with Safeway in Hood River,
Oregon. She worked there
for another seven years
and was
a union steward in her
store for four of those years. As a
steward, she was active in the labor
movement, attending the first annual
Local 555 Steward Summit, the 1999 WTO
rally in Seattle, and as many steward
and quarterly union meetings as her
schedule would allow. She actively
advocated for her fellow members and
encouraged them to become involved as
well. Lucy Hamill is now a
representative on staff with UFCW Local
555. She has been with 555 for over six
years. Lucy brings first-hand grocery
experience with her which helps her to
relate to our members in the industry.
