Kathy
MacInnis
Union Representative
Kathy joined the Retail
Clerks Union in 1977 after graduating from
Fresno State University. She was working at the
Gresham Safeway as a part time employee while
picking up a couple extra college classes and
applying for medical school at OHSU. After much
thought about lack of scholarship money, the
decision was made to make a career out of
Safeway. Shortly after that decision, Kathy was
promoted to Training Instructor and taught
cashier classes in the basement of the Lloyd
Center Safeway. From there she became the
Training Instructor Supervisor, which entailed
overseeing the training schools in Eugene,
Salem, Bend, Hood River and Portland plus
sitting on the State Apprenticeship Committees
for apprentice meat cutters and bakers. During
this same time she organized and supervised the
SMT (Store Management Training) program for
Safeway division wide. Her next position was
Employment Representative; hiring for 35 stores,
the division office and distribution center.
After leaving Safeway to
try her hand in sales, Kathy spent time as a
stock broker, many years in real estate and a
couple of years as a mortgage loan officer.
This experience gave her invaluable experience
in contract law and negotiating.
Personally, she was widowed
at 33 and raised 2 beautiful daughters and 2
great foster kids on her own. She is a cancer
survivor and feels that every person on this
earth has a responsibility to give something
back, whether it is through your job, your
community, your church or your family. Kathy
likes to think that assisting members of local
555 is part of what she is giving back.
